Times Square

Huge neon signs, billboards galore, live TV broadcasts, enormous stores and gigantic family-friendly theme restaurants, not to mention lots of fantastic theaters.

Aside from its classic skyline, the quintessential image of commercial New York has to be Times Square. This ‘crossroads of the world’ is at the heart of Manhattan’s bustling theatre district. Its iconic multi-storey video screens and dazzling neon signage have made it such a popular tourist attraction that a portion of the area has been pedestrianised to (a) better accommodate the 39 million visitors and (b) avoid said visitors, dizzy from the constantly flashing advertising, getting run over.

This is also where the bright lights of Broadway shine, with its dozens of theatres running the world’s hottest shows. From classics like Chicago to audience favourites such as Wicked or The Lion King, this is the place to see them.

For those on a budget, theatre tickets can be prohibitively expensive, particularly when seeking decent seats. If you’re willing to queue, and queue early, then the TKTS concession stand (located right in the centre of Times Square) is a great place to find cheap tickets - 50% off major shows, and some are prized seating. Be warned they can be snapped up quickly, so the show you have your heart set on could be sold out by the time you reach the front.

A good (and cheaper) alternative to the big musicals are the stand-up comedy events. Famous funny folk such as Chris Rock, or the cast of Saturday Night Live, are known to drop by for a set or two to try out their newest material.

If unsure where to go, merely wait for a moment to be accosted by one of the many street vendors selling tickets. Note that the genuine articles will have official accreditation and be wearing it openly.

Times Square is also home to a hive of dazzling eateries. All of the restaurants within the intersection will be crowded and overpriced, so while the atmosphere is electric – night and day - cheaper food of better quality can be procured from a variety of places just a short walk away. For example, the Chipotle Mexican Grill (an excellent NY chain) can be found on West 42nd, or West 45th Street.

Whether visiting at the height of summer, or celebrating New Year's Eve with the famous Ball Drop, Times Square will always be crowded and full of atmosphere. Some call it tacky, and they'd probably be right, but this glittering venue is a vital part of New York's famous, diverse tapestry.
